Furofushi Onsen

Furofushi Onsen, on Aomori prefecture's southwest coast, is almost unheard of except to onsen connoisseurs. But in those circles, it's one of those places discussed in fevered, rapturous tones.
Near the town of Fukaura, Furofushi has indoor hot springs and a very nice hotel where you can eat or stay the night, but its real attraction is the seaside rotenburo, or outdoor bath, one of Japan’s best. The name Furofushi means perpetual youth and longevity, and the copper colored, iron-rich water is said to be good for arthritis, nervous disorders and other infirmities. Stewing in the waters until you go completely limp, it’s almost impossible to imagine anyone emerging with a nervous complaint.

When we say seaside, we mean it. You’re almost at eye level with the water when the tide is in, and the occasional hapless crab will wander up the rocky beach to be slowly boiled in the bath. But sitting in the steaming water, especially in autumn when the air turns cold and the Japan Sea begins to grow wild, you’ll feel you’re a part of the sea. And the sunsets here are famous. A small crowd often descends on the rotenburo as the sun goes down, but if you’re very lucky you may find yourself alone in communion with the sea, the cliffs, and the end of a perfect day.
